use of stochastic petri net

What exactly are the uses of stochastic petri nets? I have read a paper in which log repair is done using stochastic petri nets (https://publishup.uni-potsdam.de/opus4-ubp/frontdoor/deliver/index/docId/6468/file/tbhpi78.pdf)

What are the other uses? If we find that for a particular transition, the transition times are best modelled by the exponential distribution, how can one use this knowledge?

Can I for instance, say, that since we have exponential distribution, in some cases the transition times will be very large (as compared with the average) and hence this can be a potential source of bottleneck in the overall business process?

Thanks.
